Brand Strategist, ChatGPT
What the posting says
About the role
ChatGPT is changing quickly and so is the market around it.
We are looking for a brand strategist who can set direction across a portfolio of important, rapidly changing questions about ChatGPT. We want to help people better understand what ChatGPT stands for, why people should choose it, and how it can become a more useful part of their lives. You will turn complex product, audience, and market signals into clear choices, differentiated positions, and compelling creative work. The remit spans positioning, audience understanding, product and brand storytelling, and creative strategy. Your role is to help connect those areas into a coherent view of how ChatGPT should show up over time.
OpenAI has a high-agency culture, and this is an especially dynamic and proactive team. People who thrive here are extremely comfortable with change. You should get energy from the opportunity to identify the most important problems before they are fully defined, bring the right people together, and create momentum around a clear direction. You will have space to find opportunities, shape priorities, influence product and marketing decisions, and build new approaches where no playbook exists.
Expect the work to be hands-on. You will work closely with creative, product, product marketing, research, design, and communications partners, setting direction while staying involved from the first idea through delivery.
We are looking for someone already immersed in AI who sees this as a moment they want to help shape.
In this role, you will:
Set direction for how ChatGPT is positioned in the market and shape its broader story across products, audiences, and moments. Develop differentiated positions grounded in what the product does, what people need, how the category is changing, and where the alternatives fall short.
Lead a portfolio of high-impact brand and product marketing work. Identify the questions that matter most, establish priorities across competing opportunities, and help teams make clear choices about where to focus and what to leave behind.
Use market and audience insight to influence product and marketing decisions. Connect customer needs, cultural shifts, competitive dynamics, and technical tradeoffs to clear recommendations about the product, its positioning, and how it should reach people.
Help new products land. Turn complex capabilities into strong launch ideas, demos, stories, and creative work that make their value immediately apparent.
Lean in to make work. Write the positioning and brief, build rough prototypes, shape ideas quickly, and stay close to execution.
Find opportunities we are under-serving. Identify an audience, use case, or product opening; make the case for it; define what success should look like; and bring the right partners together to move it forward.
Build frameworks that make the work better at scale. Create useful approaches to positioning, audience strategy, narrative development, and creative briefing that help teams make stronger and more consistent decisions without adding unnecessary process.
Stay close to culture. Bring a sharp understanding of how AI is interacting with creators, communities, internet behavior, emerging formats, and the wider world. Help the organization distinguish meaningful shifts from temporary noise.
Use AI throughout the work and help others learn faster. Explore new tools and capabilities, build useful workflows, test ideas quickly, and turn what you learn into practices the broader team can use.
Raise the standard of the work around you. Bring people through competing priorities, challenge assumptions constructively, mentor peers, and help senior cross-functional partners reach clear decisions and sustain momentum.
You might thrive in this role if:
You are a senior brand or product strategy leader with 10+ years of experience.
You have set positioning and marketing strategy across a portfolio of products, audiences, or major initiatives—not only individual campaigns.
You have experience as a brand-side leader in the technology industry and have influenced product and business decisions through a strong understanding of customers and the market.
You are already deep into AI. You use ChatGPT or other advanced tools regularly and can show us something you made or improved with them. You experiment freely, evaluate outputs critically, and know when human judgment matters.
You have strong strategic and creative judgment. You can identify the central choice in a complicated problem, express a distinctive point of view, and recognize when the resulting work is genuinely good.
You can connect audience and market insight with product capabilities and technical tradeoffs, then use that understanding to influence senior stakeholders and long-term direction.
You are deeply connected to culture and can explain why an idea, behavior, community, or format matters without simply chasing what is trending.
You like doing the work yourself. You can write, prototype, give useful creative direction, and stay involved through execution. You do not need a title or a large team to have an impact.
You have independently led multiple complex, cross-functional workstreams and can point to consequential decisions, disagreements you resolved, and meaningful work you helped get over the line.
You build frameworks and ways of working that improve the quality and consistency of the work beyond your own projects.
You raise the strategic bar for others through clear thinking, direct feedback, mentorship, and high standards.
You work well in ambiguity. You notice gaps, define the right problems, make sound decisions with incomplete information, and change direction without losing momentum.
