What the posting says

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

CNC PROGRAMMER, NX CAM (IGT BLADES & VANES)

The CNC Programmer role at SpaceX is expected to have a comprehensive understanding of CNC machining and programming operations. This role works in close concert with machinists, leads, engineering, and operations to increase productivity and optimize programs and procedures. The CNC Programmer will support the new IGT blades and vanes manufacturing line in Bastrop, Texas, with emphasis on 5-axis milling of complex airfoil, root, and shroud geometries on high-temperature superalloys (including nickel-based materials), plus coordination with EDM, cooling-hole, and finishing processes. The ideal candidate is comfortable with complex surfacing, contours, multi-axis toolpaths, and NX CAM. Mechanical design of simple, functional shop aids (brackets, holders, rigging, fixtures) is a desired skill.

This role sits on a project team installing and commissioning the line. We need a high-ownership CNC programmer who ships results in their core work and jumps in to help other teams when bandwidth allows. Don’t wait to be asked. If you see a problem or a teammate who needs support—machinists, engineers, ops, or another function—step in. We are looking for people who maintain a proactive, no-ego culture while we stand up the line and ramp production.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Use NX CAD/CAM to program CNC parts, including 5-axis milling (flank and point milling) for roughing and finishing of airfoils, roots, and shrouds.

Verify NC files (e.g. Vericut) and maintain revision control on programs and setup sheets.

Apply knowledge of carbide and specialty tooling; adjust speeds, feeds, and parameters for maximum tool life on superalloys.

Make or offer suggestions on drawing/process changes to improve manufacturability (DFM).

Design and/or machine simple functional components such as fixtures, brackets, holders, and rigging as needed.

Support machine setup, operation, and process development; coordinate with EDM, fast-hole/laser drilling, grinding/polishing, and inspection as applicable.

Meet productivity and production goals; keep product moving and alert management when production is inhibited.

Provide consistent ideas for process improvements and help other teams when your own workload allows.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalency certificate.

5+ years of CNC programming experience in NX.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

7+ years of CNC programming experience in NX.

Experience programming and operating multi-axis mill (and lathe) CNC machines, especially 5-axis for complex surfacing and airfoil/contour work. Examples: Starrag/Liechti (LX, NB, STC, Turbomill/g-Mill), Hermle C-series, DMG MORI DMU/DMC, Makino D-series/MAG, GROB, Mazak VARIAXIS, Okuma MU-V, or equivalent.

Experience with IGT (or similar) blades, vanes, or high-precision airfoil components on superalloys.

Mechanical design skills in NX (or similar CAD) for simple shop components, fixtures, brackets, holders, and rigging.

Familiarity with sinker EDM (e.g. GF Machining/AgieCharmilles FORM, Makino EDAF/EDGE, Sodick, Mitsubishi) for seal slots and complex features.

Exposure to cooling-hole processes: fast-hole EDM and/or laser drilling (e.g. Winbro, Huffman, Current EDM, Belmont, GF laser, or similar) including diffuser geometry through base metal and TBC.

Exposure to CNC grinding/polishing cells for leading/trailing edges and surface finish (e.g. IMM Maschinenbau, Blohm/Mägerle/United Grinding, or equivalent).

Familiarity with metrology (CMM, 3D scanning) in support of machining and coating operations.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift 25 lbs. unassisted.

Lifting, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying are generally required to perform the functions of this position.

ITAR REQUIREMENTS:

To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
