Job Description
Objective
Drivers within the transportation department are responsible for operating SGU buses to transport students, faculty, staff, and other authorized personnel, in a safe and controlled manner.
Drivers play a pivotal role in enhancing the student success by providing a safe and reliable service along pre-determined routes to and from campus. The driver is expected to conduct himself in a professional manner which reflects the ethos of St. Georgeâs University.
Essential Functions
Communicate with passengers and employers regarding delays or any issues along a route.
Complete a daily vehicle inspection sheet prior to operating any SGU vehicle. The completed sheet is to be handed to the duty supervisor once completed. Should maintenance or cleaning be required, you are to inform your supervisor immediately and list any such issues on the daily inspection form
Adhere to the busing schedules
Wearing issued uniform in a presentable manner
Observance of all Government traffic laws and best practices which are enforced by the RGPF,
All accidents, penalties and fines, as a result of driving, on and off the job, must be reported immediately to the Transportation Manager.
Report all mechanical issues to management (manager or supervisor) as soon as is possible.
Prior to commencing duty, ensure route destination signs reflect designated route and is clearly visible, LED & Magnetic signs should both be used.
Follow all recommended health and safety practices ensuring the safety of the driver and all passengers
Maintain the assigned vehicle in a clean and tidy state
Any issues or concerns which involve students, faculty or staff should be reported to the transportation manager or supervisor at the earliest convenience. Confrontation with any of our passengers should be avoided.
Perform any other related duties as assigned by the transportation manager/supervisor or other appropriate administrator
Observe safety regulations and policies and perform other job-related tasks.
Promptly report all safety violation, including colleagues suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol on the job.
Must be student centric and possess the ability to interact with students, faculty, and staff in a positive manner
Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Should be willing to learn local areas of interest and to plan the safest route to and from those areas
Skillful at maneuvering of large or small vehicles along and around narrow and tight roads
Confident in basic mechanical skills
20/20 vision with or without glasses or contacts
Willingness to submit to random drug screening
Able to occasionally lift 50 pounds
Ability to adapt to changing situations within the working environment
Work Environment/Physical Demands
Drivers within the transportation department are expected to work in varying conditions.
In addition, drivers are exposed to other environmental hazards during their daily duties, including the following:
Engine noise
A/C blower noise
Conversations between passengers especially the late-night revelers
Buzzer noise
Hours and Travel
St. Georgeâs University is a 24 hour operation, therefore drivers may be required to transport members of our community as necessary.
Drivers are expected to work a rotational shift system.
Qualifications
6+ years of driving experience
Numerate and literate with the ability to complete basic forms and documents
A valid C1 Licence
