Iron Worker (Construction)
What the posting says
SpaceXAI’s mission is to create AI systems that can accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge. Our team is small, highly motivated, and focused on engineering excellence. This organization is for individuals who appreciate challenging themselves and thrive on curiosity. We operate with a flat organizational structure. All employees are expected to be hands-on and to contribute directly to the company’s mission. Leadership is given to those who show initiative and consistently deliver excellence. Work ethic and strong prioritization skills are important. All employees are expected to have strong communication skills. They should be able to concisely and accurately share knowledge with their teammates.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
We are seeking a skilled Iron Worker to support the buildout of SpaceXAI's high-performance data centers and AI supercomputing campuses. In this hands-on role, you will erect structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and equipment supports that form the backbone of our next-generation supercomputer halls, cooling plants, substations, and site infrastructure.
You will work closely with civil, mechanical, electrical, and operations teams to install the steel that carries buildings, pipe racks, cable tray, busway, cooling equipment, and access systems from foundations through turnover. This is a full-time, onsite role with significant travel to SpaceXAI data center sites.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Erect structural steel for supercomputer halls, mechanical plants, substations, cooling yards, and site buildings, including columns, beams, bracing, joists, and metal deck.
Install miscellaneous metals: stairs, ladders, platforms, catwalks, grating, handrail, embeds, and equipment frames that support construction, operations, and maintenance access.
Fabricate and install pipe racks, aerial galleries, mezzanines, and support steel for chilled-water piping, cable tray, busway, and liquid-cooling distribution serving AI compute halls.
Rig, hoist, and set structural members and heavy equipment-support steel using cranes, come-alongs, chain falls, and approved lifting gear; act as rigger or signal person when qualified.
Bolt, torque, weld, and plumb connections to drawings, AISC and AWS standards, and inspection requirements; install high-strength bolts and close connection punch lists.
Read structural drawings, erection plans, and shop drawings; lay out from control, check elevations and plumb, and report conflicts before steel goes up.
Coordinate with civil, mechanical, and electrical crews so embeds, penetrations, and support steel land correctly for cooling towers, generators, transformers, pumps, CDUs, and IT equipment.
Follow fall protection, crane, rigging, hot-work, LOTO, PPE, and permit rules; keep a safe work area at height and around live construction and energized yards.
Support inspection, punch-list, and turnover work through building and yard completion.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
3+ years of ironworking experience on commercial, industrial, or heavy-civil structural steel, or equivalent military structural or rigging experience.
Ability to read structural and erection drawings and work to AISC connection details.
Hands-on proficiency with structural bolt-up, cutting, and safe use of aerial lifts, ladders, and material-handling equipment.
Willingness to work at heights, outdoors, and on a changing construction site.
Strong safety mindset with current OSHA 10 or equivalent training.
Willingness to work extended hours, nights, and weekends during critical construction windows.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Journey-level ironworker experience (union or non-union) and/or completion of an ironworker apprenticeship.
AWS D1.1 structural welding certification.
Qualified rigger and/or signal person; NCCCO or equivalent crane, rigger, or signal certification.
OSHA 30 and/or fall-protection competent person.
Prior experience on hyperscale data center, power plant, industrial, or other mission-critical steel.
Experience with pipe rack, equipment support steel, and miscellaneous metals in addition to building steel.
High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to travel extensively to SpaceXAI construction sites and remain onsite during peak construction phases.
Capability to work in industrial environments, climb ladders and structural steel, lift moderate to heavy loads, stand and walk for a full shift, and wear PPE for extended periods.
Ability to work at elevation in varying weather, around cranes and heavy equipment, and in active construction yards.
