What the posting says

Discord has a highly engaged community of millions of daily active users who use the platform for many different reasons, but there’s one thing that nearly everyone does: play video games. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming, and we are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to hang out before, during, and after playing games.

Discord's Payments, Fraud & Risk team enables revenue growth and protects Discord's financial health by managing payments optimization and fraud risk as a strategic function. We operate across three core areas: identifying and mitigating large-scale fraud to enable clean revenue, optimizing the cost of payments through chargeback strategy and card network fee mitigation, and partnering with Product, Revenue, and Engineering early to surface and address fraud risk — so Discord can launch with confidence and maximize revenue outcomes.

As Discord matures, this team serves as the connective tissue between Payments Strategy, Engineering, Legal, Product, and Revenue — embedding fraud and financial risk expertise into everything Discord does, with a bias toward enabling growth.

As a Payments & Fraud Analyst on Discord's Payments, Fraud & Risk team, you will own one or more of the team's core functions end-to-end — leading cross-functional programs, shaping fraud and payments strategy, and driving the fraud risk decisions that let Discord launch products with confidence and maximize clean revenue.

What You'll Be Doing

Own high-scale fraud detection and mitigation, payments operations, and risk assessment within your assigned area end-to-end — from strategy through execution and post-launch measurement

Lead high complexity fraud investigations, perform root cause analyses, and translate findings into concrete proposals for rule improvements and cross-functional action

Write SQL queries to analyze fraud and payments data, and build reporting and monitoring dashboards and alerts (e.g., Mode, Datadog) that track performance and inform decision-making

Program manage cross-functional initiatives with Engineering, Legal, Payments Strategy, Product, Revenue, and other partners — setting milestones, managing dependencies, and driving delivery

Contribute to risk assessments for new product launches, identifying fraud exposure early and executing mitigation strategies

Communicate the business impact of your work to cross-functional stakeholders — pre, during, and post-launch — adjusting level of detail based on audience

Mentor junior team members and contribute to team-wide quality and knowledge sharing

What you should have

4–5+ years of experience in payments, fraud, or risk operations, with direct, hands-on exposure to card network rules, chargebacks, and dispute processes

Deep working knowledge of payments flows, card network rules (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, etc.), and chargeback/dispute processes

Proficiency in SQL, with hands-on experience querying and analyzing large datasets to drive fraud and payments decisions

Experience building reporting and monitoring workflows using BI and alerting tools (e.g., Mode, Datadog, or equivalent)

Proven ability to independently own an end-to-end function and execute mid-size programs with minimal oversight, making judgment calls that weigh business impact and tradeoffs

Comfort navigating ambiguous problems where the issue is known but the right solution requires evaluating multiple options, with the ability to anticipate near-term risks and proactively flag or mitigate them

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex, technical findings into business-impact narratives for cross-functional and senior stakeholders

Experience mentoring others or serving as a technical resource on a team, with a collaborative, cross-functional operating style comfortable navigating differing viewpoints with peers across Engineering, Legal, Product, and Revenue

Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties). Relocation assistance may be available.
