What the posting says

About the Team

OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. The ChatGPT team works across research, engineering, product, and design to bring OpenAI’s technology to the world. We serve a diverse audience of users who are already using ChatGPT daily in their lives and work.

We seek to learn from deployment and distribute the benefits of AI, while ensuring that this powerful tool is used responsibly and safely. Safety is more important to us than unfettered growth.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Product Design Manager to lead a team focused on consumer growth. You’ll manage and develop a team of eight or more product designers working across the customer journey—from discovery and onboarding through activation, engagement, retention, and expansion.

This is a design leadership role centered on building an exceptional team, setting direction, and maintaining an extraordinarily high bar for craft. You’ll create the conditions for designers to do their best work, helping them navigate ambiguity, make thoughtful product decisions, and ship cohesive experiences at scale.

You’ll partner closely with leaders across product, engineering, data science, research, content design, and go-to-market functions. You’ll combine deep design judgment with strong business acumen, ensuring the team’s work advances user needs, product quality, and sustainable business outcomes.

This role is based in our San Francisco HQ. We offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

Lead and grow a high performing team of product designers, giving them the clarity, feedback, and support they need to do their best work.

Keep the craft bar high, helping the team turn complex problems into experiences that feel simple, intuitive, and cohesive from end to end.

Set a clear design vision for how people discover, adopt, and continue getting value from our products.

Decide where the team should focus, match people to the right opportunities, and make thoughtful tradeoffs along the way.

Work closely with product, engineering, data science, research, and business leaders to shape both the long-term direction and what we build next.

Bring together research, data, experimentation, and design judgment to create meaningful value for users and the business.

Connect the dots across teams, journeys, and surfaces so the overall experience feels intentional—not like a collection of separate features.

Help shape what responsible, AI-native consumer growth looks and feels like at a global scale.

You might thrive in this role if you:

Have experience leading and growing a sizeable product design team and know how to hire thoughtfully and help people develop.

Have a strong eye for craft and know how to raise the quality of the work through clear direction, thoughtful critique, coaching, and good decisions.

Have led design for consumer products at scale, especially across complex journeys or a portfolio of connected work.

Understand how design choices shape adoption, retention, revenue, and long-term product health, and use data, research, experimentation, and judgment to guide those choices.

Know how to find the problems that matter most and turn a fast-moving, ambiguous space into a clear vision and set of priorities.

Can move comfortably between big-picture strategy, portfolio planning, and the details of the work.

Communicate clearly, build strong cross-functional relationships, and bring teams and senior leaders along with you.

Are excited to rethink familiar growth patterns and create experiences that feel truly native to AI.

Care deeply about building products that are useful, trustworthy, and worthy of people’s time.
