ABOUT THE TEAM

The Growth Design Team focuses on driving business impact through thoughtful strategy, experimentation, and exceptional craft. We design the end-to-end journeys that help customers discover, understand, and engage with the value of Instacart.

Our work sits at the intersection of product thinking, brand expression, behavioral insight, and interaction design. We're constantly exploring new ways to make growth experiences feel more useful, intuitive, expressive, and distinctly Instacart.

We pride ourselves on a culture of experimentation, accountability, and craft, continuously evolving how we design for conversion, engagement, retention, and long-term customer value.

ABOUT THE ROLE

In this role, you'll help our product designers move from intent to launch in more fluid, faster ways, while making sure everything we ship draws on the high-quality, evolving design language of our product. You'll do it by leading and evolving the design system foundations for Growth and the AI workflows that put them to work, making nuanced design judgment explicit and usable by both designers and AI agents. At times, you'll take point on larger cross-functional efforts, from new agent workflows to design-to-code. Our AI practice in design is still taking shape, and you'll be one of the people defining it.

Our design system is the most important context our agents have. If it's unclear, so is everything they make. Get it right, and designers spend less time on production and handoff, and more time on the problems that matter most.

A paramount part of this role is raising our craft bar. Growth ships more variants, states, and flows than any team can hand-build, and a single campaign can mean dozens of modals, emails, landing pages, and in-product flows. Speed can't come at the cost of quality: you'll define what excellent Growth design looks and feels like, establish clear guidance for when and why a designer or an agent should choose a particular pattern, and ensure every new experience strengthens a coherent system.

Working closely with Product, Engineering, Content Design, Legal, and Data Science, you'll create a continuous learning loop between design principles, product experiences, evaluation, and evolving technology, shaping a system that becomes more capable and expressive as our experiences grow.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Find where designers lose time between intent and launch, such as production variants, handoff, and review, and design the system changes, agents, and workflows that remove it

Set a high standard for craft and taste across Growth, and turn it into a clear, opinionated framework for when and how designers and agents should use each pattern, including the right default

Own and evolve the foundations Growth is built on, including components, variants, tokens, layout, responsive behavior, and content and legal patterns, in partnership with our Design Systems team

Establish a shared source of truth: a master Figma file of approved components, screens, and flows, connected to code through machine-readable specs that declare tokens, states, and edge cases

Take point on building agents and skills that use the system to turn a request like "a renewal modal offering 14 days free" into on-brand, legally approved, production-ready design

Translate design judgment into evals and review agents that check work before it ships, such as an agent that reviews designs against approved legal and content patterns, and use what they catch to improve the system

Drive design-to-code efforts with Engineering, so agents can turn approved designs into shippable code that engineers review rather than rebuild

Stay close to Growth work across incentives and lifecycle, spotting promising patterns and turning them into reusable, documented foundations every designer can adopt

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

7+ years of experience designing consumer-facing digital products across web and mobile

A portfolio demonstrating exceptional visual, interaction, and product craft, including hands-on design system work

Strong communication and storytelling skills, and comfort operating autonomously and carrying work from early concept through polished execution

YOU MIGHT THRIVE IN THIS ROLE IF YOU

Get energy from making other designers faster and better, and measure your impact by what the team ships

Bring a high craft bar and are motivated to raise the quality, clarity, and distinctiveness of Growth design

Have sophisticated design taste and can make the judgment behind it explicit, teachable, and actionable for designers and agents

See a design system as a living body of product judgment, not simply a collection of components

Have a strong command of interaction design, layout, content hierarchy, accessibility, and responsive behavior

Can move fluently between foundational systems work and concrete, high-craft Growth experiences

Care as much about choosing the right default as designing the full range of possibilities

Can explain not only what a pattern should look like, but when a designer or an agent should choose it and why

Are skilled at turning ambiguous or inconsistent work into a coherent, extensible system

Are comfortable taking the lead on cross-functional efforts when the work calls for it, and bringing partners along

Stay close to the latest AI developments, modern tooling, and component-driven design practices, and have built with agents, skills, or MCPs yourself

We're looking for smart, curious designers who are excited to learn. This role spans craft, systems, and AI, and we don't expect anyone to match every line above. If the work excites you, we encourage you to apply.
