Join Our Team
Are you an experienced tax professional who enjoys solving complex tax issues, reviewing high-level tax work, and helping other preparers grow?
Join Profitable Painter CPA PLLC, a fast-growing, tech-enabled, remote-first CPA firm that exclusively serves painting contractors across the U.S. and Canada. Our mission is simple: guide painting contractors to financial prosperity.
We’re looking for a Senior Tax Preparer / Tax Reviewer who brings strong technical tax knowledge, takes pride in producing accurate work, and enjoys serving as a resource to both clients and teammates.
This is a full-time, fully remote, year-round position where you’ll prepare and review complex individual and business tax returns, provide technical guidance to tax preparers, communicate directly with clients, and partner closely with our Tax Manager to maintain high standards of quality, efficiency, and client service.
What You’ll Do
Prepare and review complex federal and state individual and business tax returns, including:
Complex individual returns involving Schedules C, E, and D/Form 8949
Passive activity loss rules and Form 8582
At-risk limitations and rental real estate professional status
Section 199A/QBI calculations, including aggregation elections and SSTB limitations
K-1 reporting and basis tracking for partnerships, S corporations, and trusts
Alternative Minimum Tax and Net Investment Income Tax
Multi-state individual taxation, including residency, domicile, part-year and nonresident allocation, reciprocity agreements, and credits for taxes paid to other states
Estimated tax and safe harbor calculations, including underpayment penalty analysis
Partnership taxation, including inside and outside basis, capital accounts, guaranteed payments, and special allocations
S corporation taxation, including shareholder basis limitations, reasonable compensation, built-in gains tax, and distribution ordering rules
Depreciation strategy involving MACRS, Section 179, bonus depreciation, and Section 1031 like-kind exchanges
Multi-state business taxation, including nexus, apportionment, combined or consolidated filings, and state-specific adjustments
Book-to-tax reconciliations, including Schedule M-1 and M-2
Consolidated and multi-entity return structures
Perform technical reviews of tax returns prepared by other team members, identifying substantive issues related to tax treatment, entity structure, basis, multi-state taxation, and overall accuracy.
Research complex tax questions using primary authority, including the Internal Revenue Code, Treasury Regulations, revenue rulings, case law, and professional tax research platforms.
Respond to IRS and state notices, including CP2000 and underreporter notices, when assigned.
Provide technical guidance and mentoring to tax preparers, helping strengthen their tax knowledge, issue-spotting, and overall quality of work.
Collaborate with the Tax Manager to improve tax workflows, preparation procedures, documentation, and department efficiency.
Promote consistency across the tax department by helping ensure firm procedures and review standards are followed.
Communicate directly with clients regarding complex tax matters, outstanding questions, and return results.
Create client review videos that clearly explain tax return results and important takeaways.
Maintain thorough client communication and workflow documentation within TaxDome.
Attend regular tax department meetings, provide workflow updates, and communicate proactively regarding return status and technical issues.
Stay current on federal and state tax law changes and identify opportunities to improve quality, efficiency, and the client experience.
