What the posting says
SpaceXAI’s mission is to create AI systems that can accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge. Our team is small, highly motivated, and focused on engineering excellence. This organization is for individuals who appreciate challenging themselves and thrive on curiosity. We operate with a flat organizational structure. All employees are expected to be hands-on and to contribute directly to the company’s mission. Leadership is given to those who show initiative and consistently deliver excellence. Work ethic and strong prioritization skills are important. All employees are expected to have strong communication skills. They should be able to concisely and accurately share knowledge with their teammates.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
As a member of the SpaceXAI construction team in Memphis, you will lead the field execution and delivery of some of the world’s most technically advanced electrical infrastructure — from high-voltage substations through medium-voltage distribution to low-voltage data center power systems and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). We execute complex electrical construction projects from groundbreaking through energization and turnover. You will operate with autonomy, own schedule and budget, manage multiple projects at once, and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. You will work with construction engineers, electrical contractors, equipment vendors, utilities, and internal customers to deliver reliable, high-capacity electrical systems that support AI-scale compute. This is a construction management role focused on field leadership, contractor performance, and on-time delivery. The position is based in Memphis, TN.
This role is focused on delivering the electrical backbone — from the high-voltage substation down to the low-voltage racks and BESS — that will power SpaceXAI’s Memphis operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Own full lifecycle delivery of electrical construction projects (high-voltage substations, transformers, switchgear, BESS, data-center power distribution, UPS, generators, and low-voltage systems) with on-time and under-budget results
Serve as the overall construction project manager and extreme owner in the field and office
Manage day-to-day field operations, contractor performance, safety, quality, and coordination across electrical, civil, and related trades
Perform project controls including scheduling, cost tracking, change management, and progress reporting
Lead coordination with electrical contractors, fabricators, OEMs (switchgear, transformers, BESS, UPS), utilities, and internal stakeholders
Resolve construction conflicts in the field in real-time across high-voltage, medium-voltage, and low-voltage scopes
Develop and manage budgets based on preliminary electrical scope; track actuals vs. forecast
Solicit and evaluate contractor/vendor proposals; support contract award and administration
Drive city, county, utility, and governmental approvals, inspections, and interconnection activities
Coordinate equipment deliveries, installation sequencing, testing, commissioning, and turnover to operations
Partner with end users, facilities, and operations teams for energization, punch-list closeout, and long-term reliability of substations, BESS, and data-center power systems
Support electrical capacity planning, space allocation, and load-growth coordination across the Memphis campus
Take on new electrical infrastructure projects ad-hoc as business needs require
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
5+ years of professional experience in construction project management, preferably on electrical, industrial, data-center, substation, or energy-storage projects
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
7+ years of construction project management experience on large-scale electrical infrastructure (substations, data centers, BESS, industrial power)
Experience managing multiple concurrent vertical/electrical construction projects
Strong knowledge of construction sequencing, contractor management, safety programs, and quality control for high-voltage and data-center electrical work
Familiarity with jurisdictional permitting, utility interconnection, and inspection processes
Working knowledge of electrical systems: high-voltage substations, transformers, switchgear, BESS, UPS, generators, and low-voltage data-center distribution (ability to read one-lines and coordinate with engineers)
Proven experience with estimating, cost control, scheduling (Primavera/MS Project or similar), and change-order management
Experience reviewing shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and as-builts
Data center, BESS, substation, or large-scale manufacturing/power facility construction experience
OSHA 30 or equivalent safety credentials
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to work at elevated heights (200+ feet) and around energized/high-voltage equipment (with proper training and PPE)
Physical effort with lifting and carrying materials or equipment (up to 25 lbs.)
Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments — heat, cold, rain — as well as indoor data-center and substation environments
Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, noise, and electrical hazards
Must be available to work extended hours and weekends when needed based on site operational and commissioning needs; flexibility required
Valid driver’s license
Occasional travel may be required to support projects at other sites
